Whale Watching in Tenerife

Did you know that Tenerife is considered the capitol of Europe in Whale Watching? In other other words, Tenerife is considered as Hawaii of Europe as a Whale & Dolphin Watching destination. Waters between Tenerife and La Gomera have evolved and created a perfect environment for Dolphins and Whales. Thanks to its similar geographical location and volcanic resemblance, it is their all year residance.

Resident Species

Our resident species have chosen our deep volcanic reef waters in this marine area. Commonly known as the Teno Rasca Marine Strip as their home.

We have two main residents here. Pods of bottlenose dolphin and short finned pilot whales. Our two species can be sighted all year round. Swimming permamnently in ZEC Zone Ten Masca Marine Strip.

Teno Masca Marine Strip

Tenerife waters can reach a depth of up to 2400m in depth. Thus creating an ideal habitable área for marine life. Marine life in our area includes giant squid, jelly fish and fish of different forms and sizes. These of which are part of their main diet of cetaceans.

Teno Rasca Marine Strip is also migration route for many species of whales and dolphins. As a result making it possible to sight atleast 22. Sometimes even more of the 89 diferent species of cetaceans that exist in our marine world.  In addition, present in these waters are loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) and green turtle (Chelonia mydas). Also specimens of hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) and leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). All turtles mentioned also visit the area sporadically.

Our marine space is declared since September 2011 as a Special Conservation Zone (ZEC). Contained in the Natura 2000 Network. Altogether our purpose is to ensure the long-term survival of our most endangered species and natural habitats in Europe. Equally important we want to help stop loss of biodiversity caused by the adverse impact of human activities.
